Extra Credit: Microbes!

Research a disease of your choosing.  You may use one from this list below or come up with one of your own:

  • Influenza
  • Measles
  • Smallpox
  • Ebola
  • Strep Throat
  • Staph Infection (MRSA)
  • Polio
  • Malaria
  • Lice

Write a ONE page HAND WRITTEN report about the disease.
Be sure to include:

– Type of microbe that causes the disease
-The origin of the disease (if known)
-How the disease spreads
-Symptoms of the disease
-Precautions and Prevention measures that can be taken

This assignment is worth up to 20 extra credit points towards your Microbes Final Exam (4/27)

This assignment is Due Thursday 4/27

Reminder: SciPi Night forms due FRIDAY

Sci Pi Night is March 23rd, 2017 from 5:30-7:30 pm

SciPi night will be an evening of Science and Math presentations designed to engage students in STEM learning

Incentives!!!!

Students who attend SciPi night will get a Science Homework pass if you come and sign in at Mrs. Spears’ booth

Volunteers  will get 2 homework passes (1 for Science and 1 for Math) and will earn service hours.  SciPi Student volunteer Form must be filled out and turned in by Friday March 17

Student Presentations:

  • If you would like to present you need to turn in SciPi Student Presentation Consent Form
  • Deadline: Friday March 17th
  • Students who put on a presentation will earn 50 points of Extra Credit towards their next Exam (in addition to homework passes for Math and Science)!!!
  • You need to come up with an activity or a demonstration that has to do with our curriculum:

ØChemistry
ØWater
ØEnergy (cell or energy sources)
ØEcosystems
ØMicrobes/Biotechnology
ØEarth’s History (fossils, carbon dating, etc.)

Extra Credit: Ocean Ecosystems on Discovery Education

Under ‘Assignments’ you have an integrated science simulation called ‘Ocean Ecosystems.’

In this simulation you will toggle different variables to see how they affect the ecosystem of the Ocean.

In the simulation there is a tab called ‘questions’ at the bottom.  If you open this tab 6 questions about the simulation will pop up.

For extra credit, answer these six questions on a separate sheet of loose-leaf paper.

Each question is worth 3 extra credit point towards your 2nd quarter grade (18 points max).  

  • Questions must be answered in complete sentences to receive full credit.
  • Every Part of the question must be answered to receive full credit 

This extra credit is due during homeroom on Friday January 6th (must be turned in by 8:14 am in order to count)

Extra Credit- Elements

Choose an element from the periodic table, and write a one page HAND WRITTEN report on it.  In your report be sure to include the following:

  • Atomic #
  • Atomic weight
  • Valance Electrons
  • Reactivate
  • What family is it apart of?
  • When and how was it discovered?
  • What are it’s uses?
  • Any other interesting information

This report is worth up to 20 extra credit points towards the 1st quarter.

This assignment is due on Monday 10-24  WEDNESDAY 10/26

Extra Credit: Symbiotic Relationships

In class we have learned that there are many organisms that live in a symbiotic relationship with another organism of a different species.

Directions:

[Failure to follow directions may result in not receiving extra credit]

Write a one page HAND WRITTEN report describing three symbiotic relationships.

  1. Research and write about an example of EACH type of symbiosis (Mutualism , Parasitism, and Commensalism ).  Make sure you say what type of relationship the two organisms share.
  2. Describe the two organisms in the relationship.  Include where in the world they’re found.
  3. Describe their relationship to each other in DETAIL.  (Who benefits? How? Is one harmed?  How? etc.)

This is due on FRIDAY MAY 13th.

This is worth up to 20 extra credit point towards your 4th Quarter Average.
